LASER ENGRAVING

THERE ARE THREE BASIC TYPES OF LASER SERVICES WE PERFORM AT WHISKEY TANGO.

We use a 60w MOPA Fiber Laser, and the type of service depends on the material we laser and the intended use.  “Laser” is actually an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Laser engraving is done to vaporize material and leave a deep void in the design or information programmed.  Marking and etching are more cosmetic (while still permanent) and allows for the customization of your part or firearm.  The surface stays intact or smooth for the most part.

The differences between laser marking, laser engraving, and laser etching largely have to do with what each of the processes do to the surface, including how deep the laser goes and how it changes the overall appearance.

The major difference between laser etching and engraving is the depth to which the laser penetrates the surface.

LASER MARKING

The laser is used to interact with the surface of a material, slightly altering its properties or appearance by discoloring the surface of the material,

LASER ENGRAVING

The laser beam physically removes a portion of the surface of the material to expose a cavity that reveals an image at eye level.

LASER ETCHING

This is a subset of laser engraving and occurs when the heat from the beam causes the surface of the material to melt.

All three of these laser services provide a permanent marking solution, fulfilling regulations and adding distinction to your products and parts.

For firearms manufactured, imported, or made on and after January 30, 2002, the engraving, casting, or stamping (impressing) of the serial number must be to a minimum depth of .003 inch and in a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch.

Do I have to engrave my NFA firearm?

YES, you have to engrave your Form 1 NFA item to be in compliance with the law. To be clear: Every NFA item you make needs to be properly engraved.

What needs to be engraved on my NFA firearm?

  • Name of the individual or entity that made/registered the NFA firearm.
  • Location (City and State) where the NFA item was made.

Also needed but often already factory engraved:

  • Caliber of the registered NFA firearm.
  • Serial Number of the registered NFA firearm.
  • Model of the registered NFA firearm.
